Foundation Showdown - Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup vs. Double Wear Light Soft Matte Hydra Makeup

I have absolutely loved the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation - it made my Monthly Favourites all the way back in July 2017 and it's easily gotten holy grail status in my collection since! I can always rely on the formula to be full coverage and weather-proof, so I'm constantly repurchasing it because I can't be without it!

I purchased both foundations - this post contains affiliate links

But, the Double Wear Stay-in-Place makeup is solidly full coverage, but, I've been trying to go for a lighter base look when my skin is behaving, so I was really intrigued when I saw this Double Wear Light foundation! I had to pick it up to see if it's as good as the Double Wear Stay-in-Place foundation, just with lighter coverage!

For starters, both foundations are $52.00 Canadian and are each 1 fluid ounce. The packaging is quite different - the Double Wear Stay-in-Place foundation is a glass bottle but just has an open top so you have to pour it out (or I think there is an option to buy a separate pump), and the Double Wear Light foundation is a plastic tube with a squeeze bottle. I do like the squeeze bottle packaging - I would really like the original Double Wear to come in this packaging or come with an actual pump top!

Here's a quick look at the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup vs. Double Wear Light Soft Matte Hydra Makeup formula - I will do full try-ons of both foundations so you can see the coverage of both of them!

I wasn't able to to get the same shade in both formulas, based on availability; but, I bounce back and forth between both shades, so it worked for me. The Stay-in-Place foundation is in shade 1N1 Ivory Nude "light with neutral peach undertones" and the Light Soft Matte Hydra foundation is in shade 1N2 Ecru "light with neutral rosy undertones".

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup in Ivory Nude ~ $52.00 CAN. A 24-hour liquid foundation with a flawless, natural, matte finish that unifies uneven skin tone and covers imperfections with buildable coverage.

The Estee Lauder works so well - I think it lives up to all it's claims: long-wearing, water-proof, flawless, with a medium to full coverage, while being light-weight and comfortable. It's oil-free and shine controlling. It is my-go to event makeup, especially in the warm months - seriously, this is rain proof too. I can't rave about this enough!

Here is a before and after of the Estee Lauder Double Wear Makeup - to me, it's a solid full coverage. All my blemishes and redness is covered and my skintone looks even. It even covers my moles. (This shade it slightly light on me, but the shade up Ecru is usually too dark in the Winter, so this does look better with a touch of bronzer - it does match my neck too despite how stark it looks!) It is a matte finish, so I find it can look a little flat just by itself, so this always look better with a full finish in my opinion!

Here is a full look with the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup in a full look - I really love how this foundation looks with a full face. It is a solid base and it wears so well. (I think your probably tired about me raving about this now, right?!)

Estee Lauder Double Wear Light Soft Matte Hydra Makeup in Ecru ~ $52.00 CAN. A soft-matte liquid foundation, with up to 24-hour wear, that blurs the look of pores for a camera-ready finish that’s lightweight, oil-free, and non-drying.

This formula is described as "matte reimagined" - it is meant to be long wearing and workout, sweat, humidity, weather and water resistant. This blurs skin tone and it's lightweight to keep skin fresh, comfortable and shine-free. This finish is supposed to be light to medium coverage that builds invisibly to look natural.

Here is the before and after of the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light Soft Matte Hydra Makeup - it's a light foundation to me and may be able to be slightly built up, but I did like the finish this had. I also like this shade in the light coverage formula and thinks it matches really nicely. This does cover all my redness and even out my skin tone - you can still see a fairly big blemish I have, but just with a little texture; but, it did look really natural on the face.

Here is a full look with the Estee Lauder Double Wear Light foundation - it does look nice in this picture, but I wish that I was as confident about this one as the Stay-in-Place foundation. For some reason, I can't get this foundation to adhere well to my nose, especially if I use a brush - it's a bit better with a sponge and extra primer. Also, I find finish tends to look a little drier than I prefer. I like to finish my base with a finishing powder and that really leaves this formula looking dry and extra powdery.

I really do like the coverage and finish, but I think I need to keep playing to find how it works best for me. I'm hoping this will be a better warmer weather foundation for me, so it doesn't look as dry (for someone with combination skin, this isn't something that happens often!)

For now, the Double Wear Stay-in-Place foundation is still my favourite (and I mean, good luck to any foundation trying to dethrone it - it will take a lot!), but I'm happy to have a lighter finish foundation as an option for better skin days and  warmer weather!
